David Lynch, the bold, surrealist filmmaker behind Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and many other quirky underground favorites has passed away at the age of 78. His family shared the news via a Facebook post.
A lifetime smoker, Lynch revealed he was diagnosed with emphysema in August of 2024. Although he admitted he would be homebound for the rest of his life, he had not officially retired from directing. IMDb has one untitled “upcoming” TV project listed under his name.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lynch began posting daily weather reports on his YouTube channel. They were a balm for thousands of his fans during the quarantine. For a couple of minutes a day, David was with us to share a brief thought and remind us that the sun was still shining somewhere.
His final weather report was posted on December 16th, 2022. A Friday again, if you can believe it.
An outré presence in Hollywood, David Lynch had a distinct storytelling and filmmaking style that is often imitated but will never be duplicated.
Raise a cup of coffee and have a slice of pie in honor of David. There will be tributes to Lynch in the days to come.
