By all accounts Sam Neill was a wonderful co-star and human being, so there’s been no shortage of Hollywood tributes mourning the death of the legendary actor and animal lover.
Alec Baldwin… maybe should’ve sat this one out.
When I first heard about the controversy surrounding Baldwin’s tribute, I was fully prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. The dude is almost 70 and hasn’t stopped firing babies into Hilaria Baldwin since 2013. By my count, they have enough kids to topple a small island nation. So with that mind, I’m willing to forgive an old man for rambling and losing his train of thought. I’m in my 40s and only have two kids, but my brain is no stranger to the ravages of time. Ask my family how many times I yell about teenagers parking their cars. (It’s a lot.)
But then I watched the video, and yikes. Alec Baldwin literally spends the entire time reminiscing about his experience on The Hunt for Red October with every other actor *but* Sam Neill. Only in the final seconds does Baldwin remember who the video is supposed to be about, which again could be forgiven due to his age, except for one key detail that Baldwin himself highlights: He made note cards. There was a script to this thing.
Even worse, had someone actually watched the video before dumping it on Instagram, I’m pretty sure it would have immediately stuck out that Sam Neill is barely an afterthought. I mean, Christ, even the caption is literally just “Sam Neill.” Nothing else! It honestly would’ve been better if Baldwin just sent a tweet. Something simple like “What a guy” or “Stay cool.” You don’t have to reinvent the wheel here. They’re not going to see it.
