The MST-ies in your life feared this day was coming, but newest host Jonah Ray Rodriguez confirmed on Twitter today that Netflix hates everything we love.
I’m a long-time MST3k fan that still watches episodes at an alarming rate, along with offshoots Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax. When creator Joel Hodgson announced the revival of the show with an entirely new host and robot voices a couple of years ago, I admit feeling trepidation. All of the promos, sneak peeks, and hype got me on board, so my kid and I mainlined both seasons Netflix chose to give us. WE LOVED IT.
We even saw Hodgson and Rodriguez during the 30th anniversary live tour last year, getting photos with them and the bots. (And my kid got to perform onstage with them; a once in a lifetime kind of thing.)
As more time passed between the last episode of 2018’s Season 12 (The Gauntlet) and the upcoming Turkey Day 2019 Marathon, MST-ies around the world started to worry that the silence meant Netflix wasn’t giving us another season. Unfortunately, we were all correct.
So, Netflix decided to not do another season of MST3K. We are off to Get Down in Lilyhammer while the OA helps us take it One Day At A Time. We will be in group therapy with Tuca & Bertie, Jessica Jones, & Lady Dynamite. The sessions will be run by Gypsy (w/ Naomi Watts.) thread pic.twitter.com/ZONkUxUlFb

Getting to work with old friends while making new ones was a gift I didn’t take lightly. Collaborating with heroes from my childhood is something I’ll never stop beaming about.

Now if only I can convince @shudder to pick us up and to let us share a night with Joe Bob Briggs?

NO. NO NO NO. It stinks.
Like Rodriguez said in his tweets, this has happened to us and our show lots of time. (We waited 18 years from the last episode of the original show until the first of the revival.)
If the growing cult of MST3K -aided by parents indoctrinating their kids- is any indication, the show may rise yet again on another channel due to our inability to shut up about the show. We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope the myriad of streaming services emerging want to capture a severely nerdy audience by picking up our show. In the meantime, keep circulating the tapes, the hashtags, and the streams.
Oh, don’t forget to watch six fan-favorite episodes for Turkey Day 2019 and stream the current marathon of all episodes on Twitch!
