Green Day Launches Into an Anti-Trump Chant During the American Music Awards
In 2004, Green Day released American Idiot, a concept album railing against the ascendancy of George W. Bush and the warmongering of Dick Cheney. Green Day had hoped it would change the outcome of the 2004 election. It did not. But the album did win a bunch of awards and eventually inspire a Broadway play based on the album. Guess who was a fan?
Melania and I saw American Idiot on Broadway last night and it was great. An amazing theatrical experience!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 21, 2010
I am guessing that this morning, Donald Trump is not feeling as much love for Green Day, after the band began chanting “No Trump! No KKK! No Fascist USA!” during the American Music Awards last night.
I’m old enough that I still don’t feel comfortable calling Green Day a “punk” band, but it’s 2016, so I’m not going to turn up my nose at the idea of obscenely wealthy 40-something men railing against the President-elect to a bunch of Spotify users on a broadcast network event created by Dick Clark and sponsored by cheap American beer and tortilla chips.
