That soundtrack you couldn’t get enough of. It never left your walkman. You knew every lyric, every inflection by heart. Your family did too, because hell yeah you were blasting it top-volume from your room.
What were the best movie soundtracks from our formative youths? The Overlords sound off. (Share yours in comments.)
Tori: Empire Records soundtrack! I don’t even know how I ended up with it, but it didn’t leave my car stereo for months at a time.
Kristy: Good call. The Gin Blossoms. The Cranberries. Better Than Ezra. Mine was probably William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack: Garbage. Everclear. Butthole Surfers. The Cardigans, Radiohead. And Des’ree! I had it all memorized. Plus it came with special CD ROM BONUS CONTENT!
Roxana: 100% Empire Records, but also The Crow, Almost Famous and R+J.
TK: My favorite soundtrack growing up? Easy: Pump Up The Volume, He’s Got Game, and The Crow. All three I still listen to.
Kristy: Oh damn. The Crow. I listened to that one over in over as I read Anne Rice novels in my parents’ basement. Major mood.
Dustin: Mine was also Pump Up the Volume, He Got Game, and probably Almost Famous.
Petr: lol Apocalypse Now for me. Goodfellas was top
oh and Big Lebowski.
Tori: You know what soundtrack was surprisingly solid? The Cable Guy. I don’t even remember the movie, but that was another CD I ended up with and listened to pretty frequently.
TK: Judgment Night. Reservoir Dogs. STAND BY ME. Oh man, when I was a kid I wore out the tape on my Stand By Me soundtrack. If you’re a Whitney fan, The Bodyguard was fucking boss.
Petr: Lost in Translation actually now that I think of it
Kristy: You know what I listened to endlessly, including its annoying “clips from the movie” tracks? MALLRATS.
Tori: Oh man, Mallrats!
Steven: Varsity Blues soundtrack was another bizarrely good soundtrack.
Kristy: Oh the title track still whines in my memory for Varsity Blues.
Petr: If i had to narrow it down these are mine:
Apocalypse Now, Lost in Translation, Big Lebowski, Donnie Darko, Dazed and Confused, Almost Famous.
TK: Oh shit, yeah. Almost Famous is a great soundtrack. And Donnie Darko is great too.
Kristy: Tail-end of my teenage years, but Velvet Goldmine’s glam rock homage blew my mind.
Tori: I had the Miami Vice TV show soundtrack on vinyl when I was like 5? That and a Disco Mickey Mouse album. I can only assume they were the only options my parents could find for me.
Roxana: CRUEL INTENTIONS—Counting Crows, The Verve, PLACEBO!
Dustin: Also, the Clueless soundtrack was terrific.
Tori: Rocky Horror. Oh the Lost Highway soundtrack!
TK: The Breakfast Club, obviously.
Kristy: There was The Songs In The Key of X, which was a sort of X-Files inspired album by various artists that I was fixated on. Thank god for BMG Music Club.
Roxana: Am I remembering correctly that The Faculty had a good soundtrack? Did I make that up? I also vaguely remember liking Idle Hands.
Tori: I was literally just googling whether Idle Hands had a soundtrack! Ugh, I fucking love The Faculty. So, I remember my first CD ever was The Commitments soundtrack album
Dustin: COMMITMENTS! That soundtrack was fucking fantastic.
TK: Batman Forever, that’s a surprisingly great soundtrack. The only good thing to come out of that piece of shit movie
Kristy: Ooooo. “Kiss From a Rose” by Seal! And “Bad Days” by the Flaming Lips!
Tori: Um, Tommy Lee Jones’s hatred of Jim Carrey ALSO came from that movie. So 2 things! Also was that the one where Drew Barrymore and Debi Mazar were wasted? As, like, sexy minions?
Kristy: Damn straight.
Jodi: I found my Pump Up the Volume Soundtrack on CD while cleaning out the storage space upstairs. If only I had a CD player to play it in. Pulp Fiction. The Little Mermaid. Aladdin.
Tori: Oh man, that period of time where every Disney cartoon had an award-winning original song.
Jodi: I had the Boomerang soundtrack on heavy rotation too!
I also had The Crow, The Craft and Wayne’s World. I bought A LOT of music in high school.
Emily: I listened to the Pocahontas soundtrack far longer than I should have. It was the shit.
Jodi: “Colors of the Wind” makes me bawl like a baby.
Kristy: Anastasia for me.
Hannah: Lost Boys, The Craft, R&J, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Batman Forever, and best soundtrack ever- Trainspotting.
Tori: Ooooo Trainspotting. Good call.
Emily: Fuck yes, Trainspotting. “Born Slippy” is still a fucking jam. Also A Life Less Ordinary. Mostly for “Leave” which wasn’t written for the soundtrack, but still kicks all of the ass.
Hannah: Cruel Intentions is awesome as well. Also (coughs, looks a bit sheepish) Space Jam.
Lainey: Singles, Romeo & Juliet, and there’s another one that I listened to all the time, but it’s VERY early for me and I can’t think of it right now.
Tori: Wait, my legit fave soundtrack: DICK TRACY
Kristy: Madonna slayed all over Dick Tracy.
Tori: Dick Tracy is not only my fave soundtrack but also my fave Madonna album.
