I know a lot of you are going to see Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend. I’m planning on it too, and most of us are probably planning on spending a bit on concessions while watching the movie or merchandise afterwards. Here’s the thing, if you’ve got $10 to spare, it might better go towards the care of Rocket Raccoon’s creator, Bill Mantlo.
In 1992 Bill Mantlo was struck by a hit and run driver and suffered a closed skull traumatic brain injury. Since that time, he’s been unable to live independently, and suffers severe cognitive impairment. This article from 2011 details his condition and his work with Marvel.
With the new focus on the Guardians movie and Rocket Raccoon as a character, Bill’s brother Michael has asked for donations and cards for Bill, who is still living in an assisted living facility. You can find more information, and a letter from Michael, over at Greg Pak’s blog. So, if you’ve got a few extra dollars (or a card and some time) give it a thought.
