Seth Meyers' Debate Coverage Is So Great They Had to Release It Early

Last night’s shitshow of a presidential debate was obviously going to spur late night TV writers’ rooms to bring their A+ game. Or, at least, those shows who have proven themselves interested in being a part of the conversation were going to. (Deliberately not looking your your direction, Fallon.)

John Oliver’s coverage of Trump’s weekend was depressingly fantastic, but because it aired Sunday night, didn’t actually cover the debate itself. Tonight (Monday), Jimmy Kimmel has booked our new ironic national hero, Ken Bone, which I’m sure will be a delightful time for all.

But from that space between, Seth Meyers is emerging to once again remind us all that he is freaking killing it. Night after night, he’s filling that Jon Stewart gap for everyone who’s mad as hell and is not gonna take it anymore, but who also, while being mad as hell, has a desperate need for comedy. Because Trump is evil and dangerous, yes, of course. But he’s also completely absurd.

Tonight, Meyers’ “Closer Look” segment will look at Trump’s weekend, which was jam packed, from the disgusting leaked audio of his and Billy Bush’s “locker room talk” celebration of sexual abuse to his stalking Hillary Clinton like debate floor prey. Oh, and let’s throw in an admission of leering in beauty pageant dressing rooms and some celebratory praise of Putin, Saddam Hussein, and Kim Jong-un.

The segment is so good that the show released the whole thing a few hours early, “because they dig it.”
