How Did Trevor Noah Do Covering His First Presidential Debate?
Trevor Noah has a few weeks under his belt now as the host of The Daily Show and he’s been OK. It still feels too often like The Daily Show writers are writing for Jon Stewart, and that Trevor Noah is delivering is commentary like a more joyful version of Jon Stewart. He seems so happy to be there, having not yet been beaten down by 16 years of the same bullshit.
He’s fine, and I’m sure the writers will figure out how to better tailor the material to the less cynical Noah over time. That said, the other guys on The Daily Show are killing it, especially Jessica Williams and Roy Wood, Jr., (and I may have developed a crush on Desi Lydic). In fact, the best part of last night’s The Daily Show, — which gave them their first opportunity to cover a presidential debate — were the correspondents who were covering the debate from the candidate’s headquarters (especially Wood, Jr. covering Bernie).
As for the main event, the debate didn’t actually give The Daily Show much to work with. All that civility and substance is not particularly ripe for mockery, although Noah did a successful job of ridiculing poor Lincoln Chaffee and the homicidal Jim Webb.
See? Pretty good, but not great, and for many of us, I’m sure, he’s still being compared to Jon Stewart. That’ll pass. Eventually. Maybe.
Or, it won’t. Considering how far the ratings have fallen under Noah so far (over 30 percent, during a heavy political season), they’ll hand it over to Jessica Williams and use accusations that Trevor Noah has been stealing jokes (again) as the scapegoat.
