You guys. I gotta tell you. When How I Met Your Mother seemingly ended last week, I was How I Met Your Murderous Outrage. But, luckily, every fearful moment of last week’s fake finale was fixed with last night’s real one! Hoorah!
For starters, I’m thrilled with Barney and Robin’s story, how their growth and development was continued and not squandered. That moment toward the end, after enough time devoted to the purpose of the entire preceding season, when they decided to divorce but stay together was so true to the characters. They’d always been best as bros, and the choice to make them eternal bros rather than man and wife made sense.
It was interesting to keep Marshall and Lily’s story the same. A swell nod to the fact that theirs was the only storyline that made sense last week. Those rascal writers!
And Ted and Tracy. Sigh. I really loved how their fate was left in the air. We know she is sick and has been for a while, and for Ted to tell his kids this story (a brave choice to never cut back to them even though we’d always heard about a 2006-filmed ending) that has not yet ended, one that may end in heartbreak, was a truly sweet way to hit home the message of the whole series, that stories live on forever no matter how or when they end.
All in all, a fitting end to my favorite show. So glad last week turned out to be an April Fool’s joke. Those rapscallions!
