I guess if you’re a British actress, you’re obligated to answer questions about Game of Thrones, and Ruth Wilson has obliged. Wilson — one of the leads in Showtime’s The Affair, but who will always be remembered as Alice Morgan in Luther — suggested that Emilia Clarke may not have had much professional choice in stripping down for her early season nude scenes on Game of Thrones.
“Women should have a choice and be allowed to express that choice if they don’t want to get their breasts out. There’s an assumption around it which I think is unfair.“I saw the very first episode of Game of Thrones and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ I just felt for Emilia (Clarke) because she was just naked, topless the whole way through. I thought, that’s her first job. I wonder how much choice she felt like she had.”
It’s a fair criticism, and I wonder — now that she has more of a choice in the matter — if that’s why she’s opted to use a body double in her nude scenes in later seasons of Game of Thrones? At the very least, that decision did lead to a very attractive new couple.
Wilson, by the way, has plenty of choice in the matter, and has used it to appear nude on several occasions on The Affair.
Meanwhile, while not speaking directly to Game of Thrones, incredible British actress Romola Garai (The Hour) separately echoed Wilson’s sentiments:
“If you have been waiting tables for two years and somebody gives you a job on a massive TV show and they say ‘we want you to get your tits out,’ you’re going to fucking do it. Then you have to wait to be powerful enough to say ‘no,’ but then you have to be a producer. As long as films are being made by five guys who know that ‘if she gets her knockers out’ this film will make $10 million more, then it’s not going to change.”
Garai, by the way, is someone you should watch in everything you get a chance to see her in, starting with The Hours.
