James Gunn has done it again. He’s thrown down a Groot reveal that’s breaking hearts around the world. This time, the truth bomb comes at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. So, spoilers below.
No. Seriously, MAJOR third act spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War below.
After the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy have failed to stop Thanos from his mass-murdering plan, half of the MCU’s beloved heroes turn to dust, among them the angsty Teen Groot. But before he goes, he says something to Rocket Raccoon. Because we don’t speak Groot, the audience is left to wonder what this final “I am Groot” means. It’s Marvel’s very own Lost In Translation moment, heartwrenching in its mystery. But one MCU fan asked Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 helmer James Gunn to translate. And a warning: you may not be ready for this.

“Dad”
Dad. Teen Groot called Rocket, “Dad.”
Somewhere Gunn is cackling at the fans who dare to ask him questions, then crumble at his responses.
that’s ENOUGH.

This comes not long after Gunn crushed us with the brutal canon that “Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.” This means, Baby/Teen Groot has two dads: Rocket and Original Groot. And that Rocket lost both his best friend and his son. Just when you might have thought Avengers: Infinity War couldn’t make you any sadder.
