Box Office Report: Under the Borderlands

Blake Lively took on her husband at the box office and … lost. Well, she came pretty damn close to toppling Ryan Reynolds, the current King of Hollywood, but in the end, the battle between the power couple resulted in a third week at the top for Deadpool & Wolverine. Its domestic gross is currently sitting at $494.3 million, and it’s now the second highest-grossing film of 2024 so far. It needs about $500m to beat the current king, Inside Out 2, but given its stronghold over the international box office over these past three weeks, I don’t think it’s impossible. Disney continues to rule all.

Debuting at number two is It Ends With Us, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s drama about an abusive relationship. Lively has worked the marketing cycle hard for this one, but this is also based on an astonishingly popular novel that dominated TikTok and the bestseller charts for years. It was enough to push the film to a $50 million opening, making it a certified hit.

Things weren’t so good for Borderlands, Eli Roth’s adaptation of the video game. That one opened to some of the worst reviews of the year, and audiences didn’t care enough about this all-star cast to see it. So, it dragged its way to number four with $8.8 million from 3,125 theatres. This thing had a reported budget of about $120 million, but given the reshoots it went through, I imagine it was actually higher than that. Ooft.

At number nine is the horror film Cuckoo, starring Hunter Schafer, another Euphoria alumni who is showing off her growing Hollywood prowess. Her latest film made $3.012 million from 1,503 theatres.

The only indie release of the week was Good One, an acclaimed Sundance drama directed by India Donaldson (no relation, as far as I know.) This one made $30,013 from three locations.

This coming week sees the release of the horror film Skincare, the 15th-anniversary re-release of Coraline, and the sequel Alien: Romulus.
