The Borderlands trailer dropped a couple of hours ago, and the reception was wildly mixed in our Slack. I initially ignored it because it is based on a video game and lost interest immediately. Kaleena said it looked like a James Gunn production, Suicide Guardians of Borderland, and that is accurate. It sort of comes down to whether Suicide Guardians of Borderlands from Eli Roth sounds appealing.
Weirdly, that does sound appealing to me. I love a good ensemble action-adventure film (see Dungeons and Dragons, the Jumanji films), I think Eli Roth is a much better director than he used to be, I’m a sucker for a Kevin Hart and Jack Black pairing (even if it’s just the latter’s voice), and just look at Cate Blanchett. Who can resist a red-headed Queen Elizabeth wielding guns in both hands?
TK ultimately concluded that he did “not think it will be GOOD, but maybe fun?” (and he’ll probably end up reviewing it), while the Professor thinks it looks like “burning shit.” What do you think?
Borderlands’ stacked cast includes Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Edgar Ramirez. It hits theaters on August 9, 2024, the weekend typically reserved for word-of-mouth hits that studios think can fill seats until Labor Day.
