Last month, Caroline Siede dropped a fantastic essay on the legacy of Kill Bill that was so good, I went back and watched Vol. 1 for the first time in 20 years. I mention this because I could not have been more teed up for the incredible dunk that Maya Hawke dropped while stopping by Good Hang with Amy Poehler.
If you’re not aware, Hawke famously appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which was a huge deal at the time because she was following in the footsteps of her mom, Uma Thurman. Naturally, that prompted a whole lot of nepo baby talk, but I’m not here to dredge that up. I am here to pass on this pitch-perfect response that Hawke gave when Amy asked if Thurman had “any advice about working with Quentin?”
Via THR:
The Stranger Things star didn’t waste any time with her response, “Keep your shoes on,” as she and Poehler broke out in laughter.“Keep them on, baby. Keep those shoes on,” the SNL alum quipped after. “Perfect advice. Perfect.”
Folks, the man loves feet! If you’re familiar with his filmography, he practically announces it on the screen with neon letters. Kill Bill Vol. 1 has a scene dedicated entirely to Thurman trying to wiggle her big toe, and Margot Robbie’s feet are featured so prominently in Once Upon a Time that Brad Pitt openly mocked Quentin about it at award ceremonies. Subtle Tarantino is not, but if you ask him about it, he’ll say he’s just part of a grand cinematic tradition.
“I don’t take it seriously,” he told British GQ. “There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies. That’s just good direction. Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it.”
Well, there you go. Case closed. Quentin is just following in the footsteps of the greats. (I’ll let myself out.)
