I feel like Nathan Fielder is actually going to be a filmmaker that, at the very least, will be studied in film school one day, if not mainstream college courses. His work — from Nathan for You to The Rehearsal and The Curse — brilliant deconstructs the boundaries between reality television, performance art, and documentary narrative in ways we’ve never seen before. He has created this subgenre to his own about 21st-century loneliness, the modern surveillance culture, and the deeply weird ways in which we perform authenticity in an increasingly mediated world.
You can See Everything, his documentary of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, shot in the 34 days before she went to prison may just be his masterpiece. I have no idea what to expect, which is par for the course with Nathan Fielder. The logline describes it as “an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon that soon becomes a mind-bending, three-year journey into the abyss,” and I 100 percent buy that.
The trailer is … hypnotic. And you kind of wonder if Fielder has met his match in Elizabeth Holmes, or if that is the entire point. Who besides Fielder even thinks to interview Elizabeth Holmes before her stint in prison?
You Can See Everything opens on October 16th. I hope it’s huge.
