Vampires are back, baby!

Robert Eggers’ long-awaited remake of Nosferatu dropped its first trailer today, and we couldn’t be more excited for it. Following on from The Northman and The Lighthouse, Eggers has decided to tackle the granddaddy of all vampire cinema. Joining him on this gothic escapade are Lily Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe (as the demented vampire hunter), and Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok.

‘Robert Eggers’ NOSFERATU is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.’

How could you not be excited for this? Eggers has called this film his passion project for close to a decade and it’s hard to argue against him being perfect for the job. His previous three films are achingly detailed, unnerving, and gorgeous works of horror that blend together historical authenticity, surreal folklore, and just straight-up demented weirdo behaviour from some of our finest character actors (OK, mostly Willem Dafoe.)

This will be the second official remake of Nosferatu, which was almost lost to time because Bram Stoker’s estate won a plagiarism lawsuit against the film (it’s really the only time people have rooted for an act of blatant art theft.) The first one was by Werner Herzog, and you can certainly see his influence in the trailer for Eggers’ take, especially with the rats. Seriously, there’s a veritable f*ckton of rats in his one.

Vampires are having a moment in 2024, between films like Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter and the second season of Interview with the Vampire. Why not fully cement the renewal of the cultural cycle with a remake of the first true vampire film?

Nosferatu will be released in cinemas on December 25. Give your family the gift of vampires this holiday season.
