Monkey Man is not Pajiba 10 regular Dev Patel’s first stab at action (that would be the little-seen Michael Winterbottom film, The Wedding Guest), but the Jordan Peele-produced film certainly makes the case that Patel would make for an excellent James Bond. Then again, who needs James Bond when Patel’s got what Netflix describes as “John Wick in Mumbai.” Netflix does not have the rights to the film, which Dev Patel also directs, and that means we’ll get to enjoy this on the big screen when it comes out on April 5th. It looks like a stellar action flick from a guy who was probably like, “Well, if Hollywood is not going to cast me in a cool action pic, I’ll make it myself.”

One of the things that has brightened the long, dark lunchtime of my soul is how many horror movies and shows we’ve been getting that aren’t centered on white, hetero, cis people. For folks of certain ages, horror was something that only happened to white people for most of our lives. I’ve had enough bland Exorcist sequels to last a lifetime, but I still love a great exorcism movie and Three looks like a must-see.

According to IMDb, director Nayla Al Khaja is the first female film director in the United Arab Emirates, and her film is only scheduled for theatrical release across the Gulf and “major MENA Territories.” I’m crossing my fingers that it will be available to watch in the US sooner rather than later.

If you live in a city where Three will be released on February 1st, please see it and report back!

Nuns are a timeless and ceaseless source of horror and fear. (Just me? OK then.) The well-worn concept behind Immaculate doesn’t do it for me, though. Mostly because I don’t think I’ve seen a nun Sidney Sweeny’s (Anyone But You) age since…Well, now that I think about it, I’ve never seen a nun Sidney Sweeny’s age outside of movies. (Little known fact, all nuns are born 55 years old.) Maybe I’ll be wrong. But, if this does end up being a dud, at least we’ll have the picturesque Italian countryside as a backdrop!

Immaculate premieres in theaters on March 22nd and should not be confused with last year’s scary, nun movie, Consecration.

This week’s lagniappe is a coded plea for help from Russell Crowe. It’s possible he’s being held hostage by director William Eubank or Luke and Liam Hemsworth and was forced to perform a questionable accent in this movie. Blink twice if you can hear us, Russell! We’ll find you, we promise!
