The Last Three Trailers That Caught Our Eye This Year

We’re going out on a high note with the three trailers I found for this, the very last week of 2023. Happy new year, everyone. See you on the other side.

Ethan Coen’s solo directorial debut, Drive-Away Dolls, is a queer road trip film he co-wrote with long-time Coen Brothers’ editor Tricia Cooke. The film stars Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Geraldine Viswanathan (Miracle Workers, The Beanie Bubble), Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo (Rustin), Pedro Pascal, and Matt Damon in a story that sounds very Coen Brothers but explores this off-kilter world with a freshness the brothers would probably never get to on their own. I’m a big fan of the body of work they have produced together. But if Joel and Ethan are going to go off on their own and create films like The Tragedy Of MacBeth and Drive-Away Dolls, I’m all for it.

Drive-Away Dolls opens in theaters on February 23.

Janelle Monáe is the Executive Producer of Fitting In, a semi-autobiographical movie written and directed by Molly McGlynn.

Starring Maddie Ziegler (West Side Story), Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs) Fitting In looks like a thoughtful, funny story about sex, sexuality, and womanhood. This means it will probably be largely ignored by everyone when it comes out until it’s convenient to use it as part of the narrative that women’s movies don’t do big box office numbers. Sigh.

Fitting In premieres in theaters on February 2nd.

Weak Layers is the woman-driven ski comedy we didn’t know we needed until now. It joins this year’s Joy Ride in an attempt to reclaim some of the comedy tropes from what has previously been an All Boys Club and also speaks to the struggle of being a woman filmmaker in a genre dominated by men. It looks raunchy and funny, and it seems like it nails the ski stunts. Suck on that, Ski School. It stars debut writer/director Katie Burrell, Jadyn Wong (who played Happy on Scorpion), and Chelsea Conwright.

Weak Layers will be in theaters on January 5th and on Apple TV beginning February 6th.

I’m all tapped out of 2023 ridiculousness for lagniappe, so please be made aware of the trailer for this emotionally manipulative Mark Wahlberg movie, Arthur The King. It’s about overcoming physical obstacles, the power of friendship, and how important the love of a good dog is. It also stars Simu Liu and opens in theaters on March 22nd.
