The team of David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, who had previously worked together on comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness, relocated to Charleston, South Carolina a few years ago along with their families and some other friends in the business. They began seeking work in the area that would keep them and their families together. Righteous Gemstones, for instance, is filmed in South Carolina.

One project that allowed them to find work in Charleston was the highly acclaimed Halloween reboot. Horror was not a genre they had previously worked on together, but they excelled with the 2018 entry. The sequels, however, did not fare as well. Nevertheless, the duo has been handed the reins to the Exorcist franchise. Based on the first trailer, it appears they’ve got another Halloween on their hands.

For many of us, this trailer played ahead of Oppenheimer and scared a lot of people who were merely looking to enjoy a three-hour movie about the bomb guy. Many viewers who typically watch Christopher Nolan films, but don’t usually watch horror films, got more than they bargained for.

Ellen Burstyn returns from the original Exorcist, and they’ve also cast Ann Dowd, just in case the film wasn’t going to be creepy enough. Here’s the logline: Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter, Angela, on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine disappear in the woods only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it sets off a chain of events that forces Victor to confront the depths of evil. In his terror and desperation, he seeks out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like this before: Chris MacNeil (Burstyn).

The Exorcist: Believer, produced by Blumhouse, opens in theaters this October.
