At its heart, the original Alien (and its sequel) were really just slasher movies with aliens instead of masked villains that were set in space instead of suburban America. First and foremost, they were horror movies, and somewhere along the way (ahem, Prometheus), the franchise lost sight of that.
One way to return to the basics is to hire Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) to direct. He’s one of the horror genre’s best, and he knows what to do with an Alien movie: Earn that R rating and kill, kill, kill.
That’s the impression that the trailer for Alien: Romulus gives, and it’s genuinely one of the most exciting trailers I’ve seen in a while.
Alien: Romulus is due in theaters on August 16th.
