After Christy debuted last week with one of the ten biggest box office flops of all time, a few murmurs popped up from those people on social media suggesting everyone should rush out and see it to support their favorite new cry more lib spokesperson, Sydney Sweeney.
That did not happen, and Jon Stewart nailed exactly why on The Daily Show last week: “Apparently, her new MAGA fan base didn’t show up in droves to see a biopic about a lesbian professional boxer who overcomes domestic violence to live her truth. Who could have seen that coming”
As it turns out, none of those Sweeney supporters showed up in the second weekend to rescue the film either. I know that landing among the ten worst opening weekends of all time for a film that opened in more than two thousand theaters is an ignominious feat, but why settle for top ten when you can be number one.
The second weekend numbers are now official, and per World of Reel, Sweeney has topped even her own dubious record. Christy now holds the all time title for the biggest drop in a film’s second weekend. The film lost 92 percent of its opening weekend take. Ninety two percent! Even JLo and Ben Affleck’s disaster, Gigli, held on to 81 percent of its audience. From Justin to Kelly clung to 77 percent.
The exact numbers. Christy made $1.3 million in its opening weekend. It earned $108,000 in its second. There will not be a third. I did the math, and on average, each screening over the weekend was seen by less than one ticket buyer. In other words, it was the ideal matinee for a teenage high school couple in the Bible Belt looking for a quiet place to make out far from their disapproving parents. Not a soul would have witnessed a thing.
Enjoy the schadenfreude. It’s not likely to last. Tickets for The Housemaid have already gone on sale for the December 19th release.
