The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back! Well, to be fair, they never left. After rising to prominence in the ’80s, the four fighting dudes have maintained a consistent presence in pop culture. Cartoons, animated movies, live-action movies, even a short-lived live-action television show! All the while being turned into toys again and again and again.

The Turtles are returning yet again in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. This time, they are being brought to the big screen by self-proclaimed Permanent Teenager Seth Rogen. Rogen wrote the script with longtime friend and collaborator Evan Goldberg. The duo will be producing the film as well, and Rogen will be lending his voice along with a horde of hilarious humans.

The tone of the film jumps out immediately and is incredibly enticing. There is a fun rhythm to the trailer, thanks in no small part to legends A Tribe Called Quest. This, coupled with an exciting and vibrant artistic style, makes the decades-old Turtles feel fresh but familiar. The director, Jeff Rowe, is fresh off directing the wonderful animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines and is bringing that same heart and energy with him.

There’s also something to be said for how effortlessly funny the film feels. The jokes are character driven and sharp. There is the classic mix of jokes for kids and adults that you’ll find in the most successful family entertainment. It also helps that the cast is filled with funny people.

My two-year-olds just started getting into the Ninja Turtles. One will run into rooms, clench his fist, and yell “Turtle Power!” … whenever he feels like it. They watched the trailer with me this morning (and then made me play it several more times). Is their excitement influencing me? I sure hope so.
