The Actor Award Nominations Are Here (Formerly the SAG Awards)

Hot off the Critics Choice Awards, we have the Actor Award nominations. What’s that, you ask? It’s the SAG Awards, but for some reason, they’ve undergone a rebrand. They call the trophy itself the Actor so I suppose they’re going for that Oscar styling. I think it sounds like a fake awards ceremony in a movie that couldn’t afford to license the AMPAS name, but oh well. It’s still decided by members of SAG-AFTRA, and since they make up the biggest percentage of voters among the Oscars, these awards are seen as an especially reliable precursor for the big night.

One Battle After Another continued its hot streak and broke a SAG record by receiving seven nominations. It’s competing in Best Movie Ensemble alongside Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sinners. All of these films did well across the board, with noms for Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothee Chalamet, Odessa A’Zion, Michael B. Jordan, Chase Infiniti, and Jacob Elordi. Some surprise names here include Jesse Plemons for Bugonia, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, and Miles Caton for Sinners. A lot of names are absent. Nothing for the cast of Sentimental Value or The Secret Agent. No Delroy Lindo or Joel Edgerton. It’s all very mainstream Hollywood-oriented, which seems like standard SAG-AFTRA, but nonetheless, I’m salty about no Wagner Moura.

In TV, things were also safely played with a few big omissions. No Pluribus or Andor in Drama Ensemble, but Landman is there? The endless snubbing of Diego Luna shall not stand! They do love The Studio, which is the most SAG-AFTRA thing ever.
