Adaptations often change aspects of their source material. It is a necessary practice! Things that work in one medium don’t always work in another. It doesn’t always go over well with fans, though. Comic book fans can be particularly up in arms when aspects of their favorite paneled protagonists are changed. That was certainly the case in 2000 when the first X-Men film premiered and crushed fans’ hopes of seeing a live-action Wolverine in yellow spandex. Director and human monster Bryan Singer knew there would be some pushback to the change and even inserted a line to poke at the fans.
Now, over 20 years later, those most understanding of fans are finally getting what they want, albeit in likely a joking manner. Hugh Jackman, who has played Wolverine since the black suit days, will toss on the classic yellow outfit in Deadpool 3. Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram (but not Threads) to make the big reveal. As would have been the case in the year 2000, Jackman looks ridiculous.
It’s obvious here that ridiculous is the intention. The Deadpool flicks are comedies, after all. This costume choice could be one of those rare instances of being able to eat your cake and have it too. Reynolds, Jackman, and crew can give the fans what they want without taking themselves seriously, which would be nearly impossible while using this costume. There could be a world where this costume works on screen without jokes, but this isn’t it.
The reveal of this costume accompanies another big surprise from last week. Jennifer Garner was reported to be joining the cast of Deadpool 3 as her character from Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. At a time when studios are scrambling to harness the multiverse for its moneymaking might, it seems Deadpool is swooping in to lambast them thoroughly. Garner may not be alone, as there have been rumors of Affleck and even Halle Berry reprising their roles of Daredevil and Storm, respectively.
After a nearly 20-year hiatus, Jennifer Garner is returning to the role of Marvel Comics’ assassin antiheroine for 'Deadpool 3' https://t.co/8RwAjkehME

Deadpool 3 is shaping up to be something undeniably exciting. There is a risk that, while making fun of the multiverse, they could fall into the same traps that some lesser films do. However, I have faith everyone is putting their best foot forward, and hopefully that will lead to a great movie. I don’t think Jackman would return to Wolverine if the material wasn’t strong, but money is a hell of a motivator.
