Two trailers came out at the same time this morning, and watching them back-to-back gave me tonal whiplash. But they also reminded me of the joke in Friends when they’re quizzing each other and reveal that Rachel says her favorite movie is Dangerous Liasons but her actual favorite movie is Weekend at Bernies.
David Lowery’s Mother Mary plays the role of Dangerous Liasons here. It’s an intense A24 film with a killer cast — Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, FKA Twigs — and it’s about a complicated relationship between a musician and a fashion designer. Lowery (The Old Man & the Gun, The Green Knight) is obviously a fabulous director, and this looks terrific.
It comes out in April. But you’re going to have to schlep out to the movie theater to see it, and it will probably be challenging and make your brain hurt.
Meanwhile, People We Meet on Vacation is based on a breezy Emily Henry romance novel that probably half of you have already read, the cast (Emily Bader, Tom Blyth) is pretty, you can watch it on your couch from home, and you’ll probably forget it 15 minutes after you see it. Obviously, it’s going to be huge.
People We Meet on Vacation comes out on January 9th. It’ll be viewed by even our well-educated audience of liberal arts majors, librarians, and lawyers 3-1 over the movie we say we’re actually excited about. Several people in the comments will insist otherwise. Don’t lie. Lean in. Nobody is judging you.
