'Lilo & Stitch' Live-Action Movie Will Be Released on Disney+

Whether we like it or not, Disney will be making a live-action version of the 2002 animation Lilo & Stitch. The film is said to be a cross between live-action and CGI (likely for Stitch, who is an alien) and is being made specifically for Disney+, following in the footsteps of the live-action Lady and the Tramp.

Honestly, it’s been a while since we heard anything about a live-action Lilo & Stitch, but it makes more sense to send this film directly to streaming. After all, Disney is already dominating the box office with other live-action adaptations like Beauty and the Beast and the upcoming Little Mermaid adaptation starring Halle Bailey, as well as their slate of Marvel films. Throwing Lilo & Stitch into the ring leaves less room for their more popular films so streaming is the way to go.

According to TheDisInsider, Chris Sanders, who voiced the original animated Stitch, will be returning to reprise his role. Filming is set to begin in Hawaii later this year, though the studio is still searching for a director. The live-action adaptation will follow the same storyline as the original animation, which saw Stitch crash land in Hawaii and befriend the lonely Lilo. However, Stitch’s arrival to Earth opened up a whole can of worms that puts his new family in danger.

Lilo & Stitch doesn’t have a scheduled release date yet, but it is being produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, the same guys behind last year’s Aladdin. It just keeps raining live-action adaptations these days, but it seems I’ll be grumbling about it until the end of time.
