Knives Out was a wildly successful hit for Rian Johnson. The ensemble film featured Daniel Craig as the Southern Gentleman Detective, Benoit Blanc, investigating the murder of a wealthy patriarch. It was exciting, funny, and felt like a proper next step for Johnson. Soon after the success of Knives Out, Netflix purchased two sequels from Johnson for $469 million. The first of the sequels was Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

For the sequel, Johnson assembled an entirely new cast save for Daniel Craig (and Johnson’s buddy, Noah Segan, albeit in a different role). Glass Onion received a week-long theatrical release, then dropped on Netflix the following month. Like its predecessor, the film did well with critics and moviegoers (or streamers). The idea of Daniel Craig interacting with a different cast each time began to fuel people to pick their ideal cast for him to investigate.

Look online and you will find no shortage of dream casts for a third Knives Out film (recently revealed to be titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery). Plenty of smart, reasonable people have pitched Walton Goggins as a potential cast member. Others are rightfully interested in Catherine O’Hara. Some would like to see Craig get his nose in the business of the cast of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Of course, the sanest of us all think everyone in the cast but Craig should be a Muppet.

We have to trust Rian Johnson will put together a fantastic group of actors as he did the first two times. It appears he’s already begun collecting them. Deadline reports that Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny will join Craig in Wake Up Dead Man. O’Connor is known for his work on The Crown and Spaeny recently appeared in Priscilla, Civil War, and will star in the upcoming film Alien: Rommulus. Details about the movie, and their roles, have yet to be revealed.

Deadline cites the website What’s On Netflix as reporting the news. The site does not usually break casting news. It primarily tells people what is and isn’t streaming on Netflix while tackling other Netflix news updates. That doesn’t mean they can’t break casting news, but it seems a little odd. Also, they’re saying the two actors are in talks to join the film, while Deadline makes it appear as though they already have. “Talks” break down all the time.

If What’s On Netflix is correct about Spaeny and O’Connor, there may be even more cast members to get excited about. Further down in the report, What’s On Netflix reveals that Tom Hardy and Lindsay Lohan are also in talks to join the film. Both feel like wild choices in a good way. We’ll see if any of this is confirmed by Johnson himself at some point, but until then, we’re off to a great start.
