Hugh Grant has leaned into his charming villain phase in recent years with Paddington 2 and The Gentlemen. It was only a matter of time before he went full-on horror movie bad guy. What’s more appropriate than in an A24 film in which he torments two religious women trying to convert him? We finally get to see the Hugh Grant that everyone complains about behind the scenes.
This reminds me of when I was a kid, and the Seventh Day Adventists showed up to my house. My father invited them in, and they had a lengthy conversation. When they left, they were clearly shaken, and the next day, they ran up to the door, threw some pamphlets at the house, and ran. My father did not torment them. He was just a gay man in the ’80s who believed in Ramtha and liked to troll the evangelicals.
Heretic hits theaters this fall.
