Actually, you probably shouldn’t read this post, either. I do not have good news for you. But I will at least show you the trailer for Mr. Irrelevant before I give you the bad news.
Pretty uplifting, huh? Looks decent, if you’re into Rudy-type films (and who isn’t?). David Corenswet (Superman!), plays John Tuggle, the last guy picked in the NFL draft (hence the title), manages to secure a spot on the New York Giants starting day roster, play on special teams for much of the year, and even fill in as fullback (and score a touchdown) after an injury. And, per the trailer, Tuggle even married a woman who is played by Isabel May in the film. Very inspiring!
That’s kind of where the feel-good story ends. Because, spoilers, he is diagnosed with cancer after his first season, never plays again, and dies two years later. Oh, and his wife divorced him before the diagnosis. That’s probably not in the movie. Because that would be a bummer on top of a bummer.
But there is a feel-good capper: The Giants paid for his health insurance for the remainder of his life, and worse his number on their helmets during the 1986-87 season, when they won the Super Bowl.
Also, Jonathan Levine (50/50, Warm Bodies, The Wackness) directs, so it’s probably a real tear-jerker, and Michael Shannon plays Bill Parcells, which is a lot more appealing than watching Nic Cage play John Madden.
Mr. Irrelevant opens Christmas Day. That’s probably not how I’m going to spend it.
