Do We Really Need a 'John Wick' Spin-Off, Plus Is 'New Mutants' Finally Going Straight to VOD?

— Len Wiseman, the ex-husband of Kate Beckinsale and director of some of the Underworld films as well as Live Free or Die — has long been tapped to direct the spin-off to John Wick called Ballerina. I like the idea — taking the ballerina character from the last John Wick movie and giving her a spin-off — but I’m not so sure that Wiseman is who I want manning that project, nor do I think that Chloë Grace Moretz — who is being rumored for the role — is the right choice. Mostly, I just think: Do we really need four John Wick movies (at least) and a spin-off? This was once a scrappy little underdog movie about a man who lost his sh*t and started shooting people in the face when they killed his dog, and now, as recently as last year, there was consideration put toward a John Wick theme park.

— Speaking of John Wick, the fourth chapter has been bumped back a week on the calendar, from May 21st to May 27th 2021, which is mostly notable because Matrix 4 is still in that May 21st slot, which means that Keanu will not open against Keanu (it may or may not be worth noting that there’s a chance that production delays will push both movies out much longer, but sometimes it’s fun to talk about these things as if there though there were not a pandemic going on and that somehow normal will just snap back into place).

— Meanwhile, this may or may not be significant, in that it possibly suggests that Disney/Fox has finally given up on releasing New Mutants into theaters and plan to go straight to VOD with it. That makes sense. Honestly, I think it will have a better chance there, particularly if it is released during the next month or two while much of the country is still under lockdown. (Keep in mind that there is a chance that this could mean absolutely nothing. In fact, that’s very likely).

— Taika Waititi, who I feel like has a dozen projects on his plate already, has nevertheless been tapped to co-write and direct another Star Wars movie. He’ll co-write with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho). We have no other details on the project. We do know, however, that Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) will also be writing a new Star Wars series for Disney+.

— This probably falls under, “Sure? Maybe, but don’t hold your breath”: Sylvester Stallone casually suggested that Demolition Man 2 is currently in development.

— If you’re really into Uncut Gems, you can bid on props from the movie, which are very, very expensive. But it’s all for a good cause.

— Finally, here is the teaser trailer for the I’ll Be Gone in the Dark documentary on HBO. As most of you know, it explores Michelle McNamara’s investigation into the Golden State Killer.
