At the end of this month, summer movie season kicks off early and in earnest with Avengers: Endgame. The 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will pick up where Avengers: Infinity War left off, which is to say with a half-ash universe littered by the shards of our broken hearts. The trailer teased the solemn return of heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and Thor, along with Captain Marvel’s much-anticipated addition to the Avengers team. Now, Marvel has released a clip that gives us more time with the MCU’s newest star. And naturally, Carol Danvers brings the heat.
Watch Captain Marvel rally the Avengers in this clip from Avengers: Endgame:
At the end of Infinity War, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sent an SOS page to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) before he was snapped to dust. In the last trailer, we saw Carol answer the call, much to the astonishment of the remaining Avengers. In this clip, we see Carol formulate a plan to strike back at Thanos:”Let’s get (the stones) and use them to bring everyone back.” Just like that.
Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) is reluctant, possibly in part because he’s not been able to Hulk out lately, so he’s uniquely defenseless right now. And definitely, because they’ve lost half of their team. Asking how this can end “any different than it did before,” he’s answered swiftly and firmly by Carol, “Because before you didn’t have me.” You can almost hear the cheers of that opening weekend audience already.
But that’s not all. We get a sense of Captain Marvel’s initial friction with War Machine (Don Cheadle), who scoffs, “Hey new girl, everybody in this room is about that superhero life.” Then comes a terse explanation of where Carol’s been that leaves a wide window open for Captain Marvel sequels set in the past. Then, we get more of that bit of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) flirting that had Twitter going wild weeks back, and a button of Captain America (Chris Evans) using language! The beard is gone, but its darkness lingers on.
This clip also teases several questions. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) says Thanos is using the stones again. What’s he up to now? Does Bruce Banner’s reluctance to return to the fight suggest the fan theory is right? Is that not the real Bruce Banner but a not-really-dead Loki in disguise? Does Rhodey really think his mech suit puts him on the level of the other Avengers? Will Thor and Carol couple up? Or will they throuple up once Valkyrie returns? And what about Thanos’s anus?
All of these VERY important questions will be answered when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.
