Following a rousing reception at the Toronto International Film Festival, the bubbly biopic Battle of the Sexes will hit theaters next Friday. It digs into the titular nationally televised tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, and offers a slew of reunions.
Steve Carell reteams with Crazy Stupid Love co-star Emma Stone to play the self-proclaimed “male chauvinist pig” and the so-called “hairy legged feminist” at the lauded film’s center. This also marks Carell’s reunion with Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Both Sarah Silverman and Stone made appearances in Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping. And with a sprawling cast that includes Elisabeth Shue, Alan Cumming, Chris Parnell, Eric Christian Olsen, Andrea Riseborough and Natalie Morales, these matches could go on and on. But the most exciting reunion is one you won’t notice right away.
Take a look at the trailer to see if you can pick it out.
Did you catch it? What if I show you a still featuring Stone and one of her former co-stars?
Any guesses? What if I zoom in.
How about closer?
Hint: they co-starred in a 2007 buddy comedy, but were not the buddies.
It’s Martha MacIsaac, who played Michael Cera’s love interest in Superbad, where Stone played Jonah Hill’s. You might remember her as the girl who complimented the smoothness of Cera’s penis, offered him “the best blow-j ever” then promptly vomited all over Stone’s bedding. Hey, we’ve all been there.
It was a rough night all around.
After Superbad Stone ran with a string of comedies (The Rocker, The House Bunny, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Zombieland, Easy A, Friends with Benefits) before transitioning to more lauded efforts like The Help, Birdman and La La Land. As for MacIsaac, she moved into voice acting, taking roles in Di-Gata Defenders, Friends and Heroes, Magi-Nation and Family Guy, and dove into TV with the dramedy Greek, the short-lived comedy 1600 Penn, and the Western The Pinkertons. Now she seems to be moving back into film, also appearing opposite Brie Larson in the Oscar-winning actress’s directorial debut The Unicorn Store.
Though you may have missed some of these performances, you can’t miss her in Battle of the Sexes as the sassy and flirtatious Jane ‘Peaches’ Bartkowicz. As soon as MacIsaac smiles, you get that flash of ‘I know her.’ So, I’m here to tell you why, so you too can relish in the reunion of Superbad’s hilarious girls, killing on the big screen together once more.
Battle of the Sexes opens September 22nd.
