As the Summer officially fades away and leaves the door open for autumn, Spider-Man: Brand New Day kept its grip on the top spot of the box office for a fifth week in a row. Its $22.2 million weekend intake brought it to $891.5 million domestically. With over $2.33 billion in the bank worldwide, it’s now the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. And it only needs about $2 million to overtake Avatar: The Way of Water. Can it get past the $2.79 billion of Avengers: Endgame? Things are slowing down now so I doubt it. Still, Tom Holland can rest easy as a bona fide movie-star. He’s in five of the top 15 highest-grossing movies ever, since The Odyssey leapt past The Avengers to hit number 14 with $1.55 billion.
After almost being deleted from existence, Coyote vs. Acme was released in theatres thanks to Ketchup Entertainment. It debut at number two with $15,468,754 from 3,575 cinemas. Not bad for a movie we were almost denied the right to see. And it did way better than the newest Ridley Scott flick. The Dog Stars may have had Jacob Elordi on board but poor reviews and muddled marketing meant it could only limp to number five with $8 million from 3,330 locations. Reported budget? $70 to 110 million. Ouch.
Buddy, the horror about a children’s TV show mascot who is totally not evil, landed at number six with $5.36 million from 1,258 cinemas. Idiots, the latest comedy from Macon Blair and starring Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr., took in $700,000. Right behind that was Finding Emily, a Gen-Z British rom-com, with $680,000.
In limited release news: Filipiñana, a black comedy about a Filipino girl working at an exclusive country club, grossed $25,075 from one theatre; the documentary The Cycle of Love took in $16,550; The Sun Never Sets, a drama directed by Joe Swanberg and starring Dakota Fanning, made $15,000; and Boorman and the Devil, a documentary about the making of Exorcist II: The Heretic, scared up $5,000.
This coming week sees the release of the Marky Mark drama By Any Means and the thriller Onslaught.
