Reviews may have been mixed and Neve Campbell’s absence keenly felt, but that didn’t stop Scream VI from topping the box office this weekend. The competition wasn’t tough but it was there, and horror is typically a safe bet in such circumstances. It premiered to $44.5 million from 3,675 theaters. That’s about $15 million more than its predecessor, simply titled Scream, which opened in January of last year. Yeah, they wasted no time here.

That was enough to beat Creed III, although it was a solid weekend for Roman numeral sequel movies. Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut, in its second week of release, crossed the $100 million domestic mark, which is great news for him and the franchise as a whole.

It wasn’t so positive for 65, the Adam Driver dinosaur film that some of us still have trouble believing is a real thing and not an SNL joke they let run a little long. Hey, he’s got bills to pay too. Those Squarespace ads only do so much. The film grossed $12.3 million from 3,405 theaters, although it’s not quite a disaster given that the entire thing only cost $45 million. For such a project, that’s very inexpensive. Still, it’s doubtful it’ll make its budget back in cinemas.

Debuting at number seven is Champions, starring Woody Harrelson, with a minor opening weekend gross of $5.15 million from 3,028 theaters. For comparison’s sake, that’s less than Cocaine Bear did in its third week. After a mere month, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is close to $200 million domestically but only having a $7 million weekend so early in its run is not great. Of course, it’s still got about $447 million in the bank worldwide. I’m curious if it’ll be reported as a flop or hit in the coming weeks. Will it make back its reported budget or is Marvel happy to take the loss since the worst Chris and the Guardians are just around the corner.

This coming week sees the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Someone keep an eye on Zachary Levi’s Twitter feed.
