Box Office Report: Are You a Resident of Evil?

Now that Zach Cregger is a bona fide horror director star, it only makes sense that Hollywood would try to shove him into the franchise/remake box. Mercifully, he chose one we were all hoping to see done properly with Resident Evil. No offence to Milla Jovovich. The new take on the legendary video game series stormed to the top of the box office with $60 million. Its worldwide intake is already at $108 million. It’s easily outgrossed Practical Magic 2, which is sitting at $50 million after two weeks (reported budget: $75 million.)

With over $2.48 billion in the bank, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is officially the third highest-grossing film of all time. Number two, Avengers: Endgame, has an intake of $2.797 billion. Can Spidey swing past it?

New at number seven is Daniel and the Fiery Furnace, a religious movie about Daniel and the Jewish exile of Babylon, with $3.14 million. Right behind that is the 40th anniversary re-release of Transformers: The Movie, with $3.1 million. And behind that is The Weight, a historical drama starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, with over $2.31 million.

Just outside the top ten is Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, the third part in what may be one of the best movie trilogies of all kind. Aardman, you magnificent bastards. Make no mistake, I would die for Timmy. Americans, you don’t know what you’re missing. This one earned $1.9 million.

In limited release news, we had three very different true tales. John Wilson’s The History of Concrete, a documentary about everything from Hallmark movies to urbanism to, yes, concrete, took in $90,000 from only one location. Then there was You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution, Spread Love & Overalls, and Created a Community That Changed the World (in a Canadian Kind of Way). Yes, that is the full title. It sung up $20,000. And Traces of Home, filmmaker Colette Ghunim’s recount of taking her Mexican and Palestinian parents to revisit their respective homelands, grossed $15,011.

This coming week sees the release of RPattz’s Primetime, the historical horror Victorian Psycho, and the delightful musical comedy Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!
