Four weeks in and Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its box office dominance. It took in $39 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic gross to over $854.9 million. Worldwide, it’s soared past $2.21 billion. It’s now the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, jumping over Ne Zha 2 and nipping at the heels of Titanic. It needs to get to $2.257 billion to sink that ship. I think it can get the job done. James Cameron is planning a re-release as we speak.
Insidious: Out of the Further debuts at number two with $25.3 million. This is the sixth installment in the franchise. From an $18 million budget, it’s already earned over $60.3 million worldwide. Horror sells, and we support keeping Lin Shaye employed.
The Odyssey is comfortably at number three with $539 million domestically, and $1,446,195,000 worldwide, as of the writing of this piece. Shout out to Obsession, which is the 10th highest earner of 2026 so far: Over $501 million from a budget of around $750,000 to $1 million.
Jason Statham is on a boat in Mutiny. I haven’t seen it but I assume he punches the boat at some point. Audiences seemed soft on the idea of boat punching, alas, as it only earned $7.5 million, placing it at number six. But that’s better than Spa Weekend, which limped to number nine with just over $3 million. It did worse than a re-release of The Fast and the Furious, which isn’t even in the top three of the franchise but still brought in $3.1 million. The power of family.
Tony, the prequel biopic of the late great Anthony Bourdain, expanded its run to over 1,600 theatres and saw its gross increase by 576%. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma also went wide to 1,036 cinemas and received a 113% boost. Not bad for a very difficult-to-market movie.
The Magic Faraway Tree is based on a book by Enid Blyton, the children’s author who is a way bigger deal in the UK and America. This film is rather delightful but is so extremely British that I’m not surprised it debuted at number 11 with over $1.36 million. But it is cute and you should check it out if you have young kids you’re trying to wean off their phones.
Hot Spot, a sci-fi thriller about a sentient A.I. ruining society — can’t relate — starring Noomi Rapace, earned $250,000; the documentary Never Stop Chasing, about a storm chaser, grossed $164,513; the road horror It Ends took in $60,512; another documentary, Learning to Fly, about the world of ultra-marathon runners, made $30,595; and the feel-good French film The Marching Band, tuned up $12,200.
Thiis coming week sees the release of Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars and, back from the dead, Coyote vs. Acme. Take that, Zaslav.
