Much to the surprise of most of us, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves received a slew of strong-to-excellent reviews. The fantasy-comedy, based on perhaps the world’s most iconic role-playing game, didn’t come with a ton of expectations given how terrible the last movie version was. Lo and behold, it’s actually pretty dang good. Paramount has some wriggle room with its big IP fare now, thanks to the gargantuan success of Top Gun: Maverick last year. Can Honor Among Thieves follow in those footsteps?

Well, it did open to number one at the box office this past weekend, with $38.5 million from 3,855 theaters. It’s already taken in about $75 million worldwide, from a reported budget of $175 million. Can it hang it for a few weeks and gain strong enough word-of-mouth to break even? The reviews are there, at least. Audiences are fickle, though. This might be one that finds its audience on Paramount+. But hey, at least we can all agree that Pine is still the Best Chris.

It’s the week before Easter so you know what that means: Jesus movies! The Christian film His Only Son debuted at number four with a $5.3 million opening weekend. That’s better than Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which fell from two to six in its third week of release and is sitting at a dismal domestic take of over $53.4 million. I’m sure we won’t see Zachary Levi doing social media videos about how Jesus screwed him over.

The Sundance award-winning drama A Thousand and One, starring Teyana Taylor, has some of the strongest reviews of the year. It opened with $1.8 million from 926 locations. In other indie release news: The horror remake Malum earned $221,738, while the Cornish folk horror film Enys Men, which you should definitely go see if you can, made $71,200 from 62 cinemas.

This coming week sees the release of the Nike sports drama Air, the not-Bob Ross artist movie Paint, Kelly Reichardt’s own artist film, Showing Up, and the animation The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
