Spielberg’s back, baby! The man who basically birthed modern movie box office culture has returned to cinemas with an original blockbuster, just like the good old days. The sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, earned $44 million over the weekend. It had basically no new competition because the industry knows better than to get in Spielberg’s way.
But don’t worry for the likes of Obsession ($188.3 million in five weeks) and Backrooms ($160 million in three weeks.) Things weren’t so great for Scary Movie, which saw a sharp 73% fall from its opening weekend. Masters of the Universe also saw a sharp decline from its opening gross: 70%! The year-end analyses of audience tastes are going to be highly revealing.
The hardcore action movie The Furious landed at number eight with $2.75 million. You do not need to see The Fast first to enjoy it. Right behind that is Stop! That! Train!, the drag comedy starring RuPaul. It earned just over $2.02 million from 1,161 locations. Stop using generative AI in your movies, people.
For anyone wondering, the highest grossing film of 2026 is still The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which has over $1 billion in the bank. But extremely close to overtaking that is Michael, which has $932.2 million worldwide.
This coming week sees the release of the drama Rose of Nevada, the gritty reimagining The Death of Robin Hood, and the animated sequel Toy Story 5.
