It’s no secret that Robert Downey Jr. helped to kickstart the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008’s Iron Man. The MCU has surpassed 20-something movies at this point and with the unveiling of Marvel’s slate for Phases 4 and 5, the shared universe is set to continue growing for many years to come. With awards season just around the corner, all studios are releasing their “For Your Consideration” submissions, which Disney has now adjusted to include a push for Robert Downey Jr. in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Avengers: Endgame. Yes, you read that right.

The House of Mouse had originally submitted Avengers: Endgame in the category of Best Picture, but hadn’t included Robert Downey Jr., though he had requested that Disney not launch a campaign on his behalf. It’s not clear what changed Disney’s mind (it sure wasn’t RDJ), however, he’s now in consideration alongside fellow co-stars, Chris Evans, Don Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth et al. Per Collider, Disney has also submitted Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and more for consideration in the Best Supporting Actress category.

RDJ, who’s made some questionable acting choices lately (looking at you, Doctor Doolittle and The Adventures of Pinocchio) is a good actor and he was good in Endgame, but his nomination is questionable and yet, it’s also unsurprising. Now, I’m not opposed to superhero films being nominated for awards. We all know that sci-fi/fantasy films have largely been shut out of awards spaces in general, but even objectively, Avengers: Endgame is a singular puzzle piece. A part of a whole and without the 20-something films before it, its existence isn’t as powerful.

So, does it deserve the nomination when it doesn’t stand on its own? Does RDJ?
