There has probably been more talk of Civil War in America these last few years than there has been since the actual Civil War. The nation is divided between Red State and Blue State, and too often, they are woefully incompatible. New Yorkers do not want to be governed by Alabama Senators and vice versa.
It’s unclear from the trailer for Alex Garland’s Civil War what is behind this domestic war (based on Jesse Plemons’ character, I am guessing it has something to do with white supremacy). Nick Offerman plays the President, who is forced(?) to drop bombs on his own people to keep the country together. Kirsten Dunst plays a photojournalist trying to document the war. According to Garland, it’s set in the near future and operates “as a sci-fi allegory for our currently polarised predicament.”
It sounds from the trailer like California and Texas are on the same side, so Garland’s film is going to have to overcome a big leap of logic from the jump.
Civil War opens on April 26th, 2024.
