Do the Golden Globes matter? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s big night has been mired in controversy for years regarding its shady and un-diverse membership and accusations of favouritism. The furore led to a supposed overhaul of the entire organisation, but it’s now part of the Penske Media monopoly, so is that any better? Out of all the awards in Oscar season, the Globes is the one we should probably take the least seriously, and just enjoy it as a fizzy evening of drinks, gowns, and good speeches. And in that aspect, the ceremony and host Nikki Glazer delivered.
To the surprise of nobody, One Battle After Another was the big hit of the night, taking home Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Teyana Taylor. It was Taylor’s shock and gratitude that made for one of the evening’s best speeches.
The acting wins were a mix of expected and surprising, which is always more fun than a predictable season-long sweep. Timothee Chalamet continues to be the Best Actor frontrunner for Marty Supreme, but Wagner Moura’s win for The Secret Agent — which won Best International Film — was a true joy, especially for Brazilian stans and myself. We are united as one. Stellan Skarsgård won Best Supporting Actor for Sentimental Value and was welcomed to the stage by the dulcet tones of ‘Yeah!’ by Usher and Lil Jon. As is tradition in Sweden.
The Best Actress race continues to be a one-two fight between Jessie Buckley of Hamnet and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You star Rose Byrne, who won in their respective categories. Byrne thanked her husband Bobby Cannavale, who couldn’t be there because he was at a reptile expo in New Jersey. This is the best ‘I’m washing my hair’ excuse of all time. Start using it immediately, everyone!
Amy Poehler won the first ever Golden Globe for Best Podcast, and if anyone had to win this very odd award, I’m glad it’s her. She’s a great podcast host, her show is fun, and it’s the best example we have of a celeb-hosted series in this format. And let’s be honest, we’re all still surprised that the voters didn’t nominate Joe Rogan or Theo Von.
In TV, The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence kept up their season-long domination. Ricky Gervais (ugh) won for Best Stand-Up, but it was Wanda Sykes who got to accept the award on his behalf. As Ricky would have wanted, she thanked God and the trans community on his behalf.
It is exciting to see how so much of this awards season feels up in the air right now. There have been years where, by the time the Globes are done, everything was set in stone and nothing deviated from those decrees. That’s really only satisfying if it’s your choices that win, and that seldom happens for me, so I prefer a messier mix-up. 2025 was a strong year and there really aren’t any movies here that I’d feel angry to see winning. There’s mercifully no Emilia Perez. But I also think it’d be the shock of the decade if One Battle After Another didn’t win Best Picture in every ceremony it’s nominated for. Maybe some things are unstoppable this year. But hopefully not everything.
