They really threw every water-based monster movie trope into Meg 2: The Trench. You’ve got Jurassic Park (pick one), Jaws, Jaws 2, and Jaws 3D. They should have added a banana boat sequence to complete the set. There’s some Deep Blue Sea in there along with the humor of Piranha 3DD. Plus, it seems like it could be a prequel to Pacific Rim with all of that talk about “something is coming up out of the trench!”

There’s not one, not two, but THREE Megs in this one and Jason Statham is in full Action Hero Stunt mode. It’s going to be spectacular.

My only concern is that they haven’t held anything back for the inevitable third movie, which will obviously be titled The M3G. We’re only a short animatronic doll skip away from a M3GAN/The Meg crossover project. In a fight between a CGI sea monster and a murderous AI can there be any winners losers?

Martial Arts film star Wu Jing joins the cast of Meg 2: The Trench with Statham, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy from the first movie. Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Rambo: Last Blood), Skyler Samuels (The Duff) and Cliff Curtis also star. Can you imagine if they tried to make this sequel WITHOUT Cliff Curtis? Honestly, I’m team Put Cliff Curtis In Everything, so no. I cannot imagine them making this without him.

Meg 2: The Trench opens in theaters August 4.
