Word out today is that the M3GAN spin-off, Soulm8te, will be headed straight-to-streaming, which makes sense to me. There are very few examples of sequels to fun-bad movies like M3GAN succeeding (and indeed, M3GAN 2.0 earned one-third of the original), and the idea of a spin-off to a fun-bad hit seems preposterous, though I expect it’ll do decent numbers on digital pay-per-view before inevitably taking up thumbnail space on Peacock or Netflix.
They also released the trailer for Soulm8te. It looks OK, although it also looks like a movie that should go straight to streaming.
My question throughout the trailer, though, was this: Who is that Justin Long knock-off playing co-lead in the movie?

My first thought was that it was actually Justin Long’s brother, but no. That’s not it. Those of you who have the superior ability to see in high-frequency bland white guy may have already guessed who it is. His name is David Rysdahl, and as far as I could tell, I’d never heard of or seen the guy before in my life.
But then I looked him up. Apparently, I have seen him. Several times. In fact, this guy was the lead in the fifth season of Fargo, which I have most definitely seen. Do I have any memory of this guy? I do not. I found a photo that purports to be him, but I just see a desk, a window, and a floating pair of glasses.

He was also in every episode of Alien: Earth. I’ve seen every episode. Never seen this beard hovering over a control panel before.

He was also Donald Hornig in Oppenheimer, and IMDb assures me that his scenes were not cut, but I think his character may be an AI hallucination.

I’m also told that he is married to Zazie Beetz. It must be weird for her to climb into an empty bed every night only to discover that there’s a human shape underneath the blankets. Here she is standing next to what Getty Images assures me is her husband. I guess this is what it means to be a character actor: so versatile that he actually blends in with the background.
