The most Anna Delvey thing ever is Anna Delvey competing on Dancing With the Stars while wearing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement ankle monitor. Delvey was released from prison in 2021 after serving four years on grand larceny charges from back in her twenty-something, roustabout New York days of pretending to be a German heiress. Now, she’s allowed to “travel within 70 miles of her home base anywhere in the five boroughs of New York City.”
The second most Anna Delvey thing is to be totally blasé about Dancing With the Stars.
“I kind of got talked into doing this,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I got the permission from ICE and then it was kind of too late to back out.” Yeah, that sounds like the appropriate amount of excitement for Dancing With the Stars. When asked about the ankle monitor, though, she didn’t understand all the fuss. “In what way would it affect my performance? It’s actually pretty light,” she said.
As for the competition, she says all she really wants is “to have some fun and maybe get in a little workout.” When asked what it would mean to her to win, she answered, “Nothing, really. I don’t know.”
This woman understands what she’s here for. I’m still convinced she’s at least a little bit in on the joke about herself and not just a total lunatic, and for that reason and that reason only I will watch … the YouTube videos of her dances the day after the show airs. Perhaps there is a place for irony and camp on celebrity competition shows after all?
Her partner Ezra Sosa, by the way, says he’s excited for the world to see “the real Anna Delvey” and her “dance ability.”
“The media has seen a representation of her that I personally think is not her,” he added, which is so cute for him to say, I’m sure she liked that. He’s a newbie, though, so he would like to win.
“For me, it’d mean a little bit more than that though, because I do love what I do and this show’s been my biggest dream,” he said. Hearing this made Delvey feel bad for her answer, so then she rethought it and said, “I get to have the ball, I guess?” (Entertainment Weekly)
