I’m not trying to be a busybody rubbernecker, but the accident that Alan Ruck was involved in at the end of October continues to baffle me, and there’s still no explanation for it. For those who may have missed it, Ruck was driving an electric pick-up truck that suddenly and inexplicably darted through an intersection, crashed into a couple of cars, and into a pizza shop. Traffic cameras caught the accident.
Thankfully, no one was killed in the accident. According to witnesses, Ruck immediately expressed concern for others, fearing that he had hurt someone. He was not under the influence. He was very apologetic but did not at the time have an explanation for why he darted across a busy intersection and into a pizza shop. No charges, however, were brought against him.
Here’s where it gets weirder. Ruck is being sued for negligence by the driver of the car sitting at the red light before Ruck rammed into the pizza shop. Horacio Vela claims he suffered “severe injuries and damages.” What’s odd here is that Alan Ruck has insurance, and Vela only wants to collect what he’s owed by the insurance company, according to his lawyer, but State Farm is not paying up.
“Accidents happen. That’s what insurance is for. But Alan Ruck’s insurance company, State Farm, has refused to accept responsibility for the crash. Even worse, Ruck’s State Farm adjuster has ghosted us for weeks despite repeated calls and letters seeking to work out an amicable settlement,” Neama Rahmani, president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, said in a statement.
The lawyer says he’s happy to negotiate a settlement with State Farm, but they’re unresponsive. In the meantime, no one is taking responsibility for the accident: “Ruck says he doesn’t know what happened, and police say it was a vehicle issue while Rivian, the manufacturer, says the truck was working properly.”
Alan Ruck is the one being sued, but the issue here is between State Farm and the manufacturer of the Rivian. If Ruck was at fault, State Farm has to pay. If there was a defect, Rivian has to pay. Because he was not intoxicated, unless Ruck had a weird out-of-body experience, a stroke that has not been detected, or a death wish, I don’t know if there is another explanation besides a manufacturer defect for why his car would behave that way.
It’s a bizarre situation. Also, my favorite fact about Alan Ruck is that he married Mireille Enos.
