If you went Internet dark over the weekend like we did, you might have missed this. I got away for the long weekend and spent some time with friends for the first time in two years, and when I got back, my wife was like, “You’ve got to see this. Taylor Hawkins’ son, Shane, plays drums at the Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins’ tribute concert on, of all things, ‘My Hero.’”
I said, “No thank you, I’m not ready to watch that right now,” and she ignored me and hit play. It is powerful, and I know the 16-year-old kid hits the drums hard already, but watching him, it feels like he’s hitting them extra hard for his dad. And holy shit, the kid can play. This is not like a cute, novelty, “Hey! Look! A teenager playing drums! How cool!” No, this kid is next level. He blows the roof off the place. It is mesmerizing.
Shane Hawkins ain’t just playing drums. He’s getting a workout, and probably exorcising some grief. RIP Taylor.
