Rapper/record producer/fashion designer Kanye West has dipped his toe into a daring new concept with a sneaker that’s got Twitter squawking. At Fast Company Innovation Festival last week, the multi-hyphenate and his head designer Steven Smith hyped the Yeezy Foam Runners, which are intended to reduce the wearer’s carbon footprint.

Yahoo reports West’s new shoe is eco-friendly because it’s made in part from pond-sourced algae. Sole Collector notes this production method not only allows Yeezy to avoid using fossil fuels typically employed in sneaker making but also gives the company cause to clean waterways, which improve the water for wildlife and potability.

West also revealed his company is in search of environmentally-minded dyes to give this sustainable sneaker some color. For now, the Yeezy Foam Runners will only come in white and khaki. They will be available for sale in early 2020 and will retail for $75.

However, these details have gotten lost on social media. There, the Yeezy Foam Runners’ unusual look has dominated the conversation, because it’s a lot of look.

Here’s what Twitter users had to say on West’s latest fashion risk.

Jokes aside, if Yeezy pulls this off, sneaker companies might have a more eco-friendly model to follow.
