It’s official: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged. The story seemed to bring the internet to a standstill when it was announced this week. The biggest pop star on the planet and an acclaimed two-time Super Bowl-winning football player have decided to make it official. Name an important news outlet and they covered the story. For some, it had been a long time coming, an inevitability that some had called out the moment the pair hooked up and were immediately hot and heavy for one another.

The chances are you already have an opinion on the power couple known as TNT. Even if you don’t care much for them as individuals, you’ve probably got a few thoughts on their cultural omnipresence over the past couple of years. Everything they’ve done or said (or not) has become headline news in a way we haven’t really seen with a major celebrity couple since, arguably, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It’s not simply that they’re two famous people hooking up: it’s that they’re two skilled celebrities who are enthusiastic about their joint ambitions.

Swift and Kelce have enjoyed being a unit, publicly showing off their love and greatness. Swift’s very presence at American football games led to a massive increase in viewership numbers for the NFL and merchandise sales for the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Fortune, the Kelce-Swift relationship had led to a startling $331.4 million increase in the value of the Chiefs franchise. Kelce dressed up in a top hat and tails to dance on stage at the Eras Tour. Most recently, Swift announced the title of her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, on Kelce’s podcast. It all lined up nicely with Kelce’s appearance on the cover of GQ and his recent announcement of a collaboration with American Eagle jeans. TNT has proven to be a very good business.

Swift has been in many notable relationships, often with famous men, from Calvin Harris and Joe Alwyn to Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Hiddleston. Some of these men were, if not equal to her generation-defining level of mega-fame, then influential in their respective fields. But she hasn’t been part of a power couple until Kelce. By “power couple,” I mean a pair of celebrities who are both notable in their own right but consciously join forces to create a grander display of cultural and financial clout. You can be made more famous by such a union (such as when Kim Kardashian married Kanye West) and make being in that relationship a big part of your brand (hello, Lauren Sanchez Bezos). Power couples collaborate, be it on shared projects, philanthropic endeavours, or the branding of themselves. They can do what the individuals alone cannot.

Contrary to the conspiracies of Gaylors and right-wingers, Swift did not need Kelce to boost her profile. Travis, however, did undeniably benefit from the presence of his hyper-famous girlfriend-turned-fiancée. Being a major American athlete seldom translates outside of the USA, but TNT helped to get Chiefs jerseys in my local sportswear shop. Still, long before Swift entered the scene, Kelce was working hard to establish himself as a long-term celebrity investment off the pitch. He was on SNL, did big brand deals, and was the star of a dating show.

A shocking percentage of American footballers end up broke once they retire. It’s an industry where the average age of retirement is about 27, one where college kids get flung into the spotlight with astonishingly high salaries and no guidance in financial management. For every Michael Strahan, there are 30 former players filing for bankruptcy or left close to destitute. You can’t blame Kelce for wanting to avoid that, and he’s been hugely successful in making not only himself a big deal but his entire family. Hell, his mother’s about to appear on The Traitors! Kelce is now 35 and balancing a ton of side-hustles along with American football. Why wouldn’t he want to lean into being ‘America’s sweetheart’ now that he’s put a ring on it?

No, I don’t think TNT is a PR set-up. Yes, I do think these are two people in love who nonetheless have a savvy understanding of how their romance can give them both a professional and monetary boost. If they both wanted to, I’m sure they could have kept this relationship private, much as Swift had done with Joe Alwyn for six years. A lot of people seem to view any act of celebrity performance as inauthentic or devoid of a true emotional core. We’re all too cynical after years of sponcon and cheesecake magazine covers. But fame is a business, and here are two people who are exceedingly proficient at it. Most celebrities aren’t.

Being famous sucks. It’s certainly not conducive to developing a healthy romantic relationship. Swift, however, is someone who has made her relationships a crucial part of both her image and her art. She spent years quietly encouraging her fans to pick over her lyrics for clues about her past romances. Some romances she has exerted better narrative control over than others, but with Kelce, he has been an eager participant in it all.

And it certainly benefits her brand. It’s real Miss Americana stuff. I’ve seen some call this her MAGA era, which I don’t think is true (although hanging out with the likes of Brittany Mahomes does inspire some real ick). Swift is well beyond needing to adhere to cultural trends, but there is a safety to the image of being, as she described herself in her engagement announcement, the English teacher who fell for the gym teacher. The poet and the football player. The blonde and the brunette. The capitalists. The salespeople. The engagement variant vinyl, now on preorder. That’s power. Why wouldn’t they both milk it for all its worth? The people desire it, after all.
