The Internet Isn't All Bad: Raising Awareness With Hot Actors and Puppies
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge got a lot of criticism thrown at it when the campaign was at its peak two summers ago. A lot of people were outraged or annoyed to a confusing degree, because (as best we could tell) 1. When something is popular, our instinct is often to tear it down, and 2. It was hard to tell exactly how dumping buckets of ice water on celebrities was actually doing anything.
But those haters were all eventually made to suck it because not only did that challenge raise enough money to make HUGE bounds in research of the disease, but it’s a gross oversight to ignore the fact that WE NOW ALL KNOW WHAT ALS IS. Awareness: it’s a real thing.
The new highly visible awareness-raising video campaign is the 22 Pushup Challenge. The idea that each video features someone doing 22 pushups, representing the horrific statistic that every day, 22 veterans commit suicide. Like the Ice Bucket Challenge, it’s open to us normies, but it’s getting big attention from the celebrities who are participating. This is only just starting to gain attention, thanks to a man named Will Doge who nominated Chris Pratt. Chris and Anna Faris did the challenge together, in a really cool move to give this campaign a boost, that also happened to be an adorable showing of couple workout motivation support because 22 pushups is a LOT for the average woman (and probably person in general).
Pratt, in turn, nominated The Rock, John Krasinski, and Vincent D’Onofrio. They all accepted, and they all also included cute dogs for a bonus.
The Rock’s puppy is super excited about this challenge, you guys.
#22PushUpChallenge Raising awareness for our 22 US vets who commit suicide daily. If you're a vet and you're going thru it, just know we're thinking about you and you're not alone. Be strong, have faith, keep fighting that good fight and there's always a better day. I challenge my boys @kevinhart4real and @justinjames99 as well as our history making first black OLYMPIC Gold medalist in swimming @swimone13. Thanks to my bud @prattprattpratt for passin' the torch and Hobbs the beast for the bad breath kisses. I'll take em all day 😂💪🏾🇺🇸
Just like with Ice Buckets, everyone who takes the challenge nominates three more people to do it. Krasinski tapped Chris Evans here, who ALSO has way too cute of a dog.
And now Dax Shepard, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Hart (who’s on his honeymoon right now, so we’ll be patient, I guess), J.J. Watt, and Simone Manuel (who’s also a little busy at the moment crushing it at the Olympics) have all been nominated.
Muscles, puppies, and awareness for PTSD and a epidemic of suicide on a level most of us didn’t know existed. Well done, internet. Sometimes you’re okay.
