Ted Lasso may have ended, but the cast members continue to provide us with memories. Season three of the Apple TV series was largely a bust, with one notable exception being Phil Dunster’s Jamie Tartt. Having the best character arc of the entire series and a performance that cemented him as the season’s heart, he was genuinely terrific in the role of a lovable prick. What was even better was his dynamic with Brett Goldstein’s Roy, as they grew to be unlikely friends in the series’ final season. Both Dunster and Goldstein were nominated for Emmys in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy category. While Goldstein was a lock, having won the award two times in a row, Dunster, who had yet to be nominated, was a bigger question mark.
As overjoyed as many fans were about Dunster getting his due and the entire series continuing to receive recognition, the excitement may have been even greater for Goldstein and Dunster themselves.
In a post on Instagram, Dunster included a behind-the-scenes photo of him and Goldstein, thanked the Television Academy for the Ted Lasso love, and detailed calling his mother with the news, which nearly resulted in her crashing her car.
“This is such an incredible show to be involved in — full of joyful people who are really funny and very fit…none more so than my hunk of a castmate @mrbrettgoldstein, who I’m so proud to be nominated alongside.”
In an interview with Deadline about the nomination, he was asked whether he saw Goldstein as competition for the prize.
“Oh, no, man. There will be no face-off with [Brett]. It means I’ll get to hug him, cheer him on from up close, and smell him because [Brett’s] so loved.”
Goldstein also spoke about the nomination on his personal Instagram. Along with expressing how fortunate he feels to be a part of Ted Lasso and nominated alongside other wonderful actors, he made sure to highlight his co-star.
“What an incredible list to be on, and, at long last, it is wonderful to see my fit boyfriend and extraordinary talent @phildunster added to that list.”
More casts should express their affection for each other this openly. Who knows who will win on Emmy night — though Dunster seems to be the more deserving of the two. Who knows if there will even be a broadcast at this rate? But at least we know for whom they’re both rooting.
